About

Institute History

The UC San Diego Institute for Public Health was established in 2014, to address and expand on emerging opportunities for promoting public health through trans-disciplinary efforts across UC San Diego. The Institute supports and closely collaborates with faculty, researchers, clinicians and students from the UC San Diego Department of Family Medicine and Public Health (FMPH), and the local community.

Vision and Goals

In alignment with the university-wide Strategic Plan, the Institute for Public Health strives to be student centered, research focused, and community engaged.  It unites multidisciplinary UC San Diego students and faculty interested in public health, to improve the health and wellbeing of populations locally, nationally, and globally.  Primary goals are:

  • To support public health degree offerings and student engagement in public health research opportunities available through the FMPH Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), the Joint Doctoral Program (JDP) in Public Health, the General Preventive Medicine Residency Program, and other Department programs.
  • To promote cutting edge, trans-disciplinary public health research across UC San Diego, to improve the health of populations locally, nationally and globally. Examples of fruitful collaborations include those with Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and the UC San Diego School of Engineering, Department of Social Sciences, and the School of Medicine.
  • To improve the health of our local communities through student and faculty public health community service, dissemination of research findings, and implementation of evidence-based public health interventions.
