Institute History

The UC San Diego Institute for Public Health was established in 2014, to address and expand upon emerging opportunities for promoting public health through trans-disciplinary and cross sectoral efforts across UC San Diego and the greater community. The Institute supports and closely collaborates with faculty, researchers, clinicians and students from the UC San Diego Department of Family Medicine and Public Health (FMPH), numerous other Campus departments and affiliated institutions, and greater San Diego.

Fruitful collaborations have included those with Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the UC San Diego School of Engineering (including Bioengineering, Qualcomm Institute, DesignLab, Center for Population and Wireless Health Systems), Department of Social Sciences, Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, International Institute, and International House, while global affiliates have included the Global Observatory on Physical Activity.

Vision and Goals

In alignment with the University-wide Strategic Plan, the Institute for Public Health actively works to build linkages between researchers, students, educators, and clinical and industry partners, interested in collaborative workto improve the health and wellbeing of populations locally, nationally, and globally.  Its primary goals are:

  • To support public health degree offerings and student engagement in public health research opportunities available through the Department’s multiple undergraduate and graduate public health programs.
  • To promote innovative, transdisciplinary public health research and education.

Research Working Groups

The IPH supports the activities of three Working Groups.  Although each has slightly different missions and activities, all capitalize upon specialized local expertise which offers unique opportunities to shape 21st century public health education and practice.  The three primary Working Groups and their Co-Chairs are:
